What is CPA?

CPA (cost per acquisition) is what you pay in advertising for each conversion. The formula: total ad spend divided by conversions. Spend $5,000 and get 100 customers, your CPA is $50. CPA also stands for Certified Public Accountant, Continuous Payment Authority, and Care Programme Approach.

Your CPA$50.00spend ÷ conversions

$5,000 ÷ 100 conversions = $50.00 per acquisition. Judge it against your vertical median and your break-even ceiling, not a universal number.

Where CPA sits

Last gate of the paid funnel

Every paid impression walks the same four gates. CPM prices the first, CPC the second, CPA the last. Optimizing an upstream metric while the downstream one degrades is the classic way to lower CPC and raise CPA at the same time.

FAQ

Quick answers

What is CPA in marketing?

CPA (cost per acquisition) is the average advertising cost of one conversion: total ad spend divided by conversions. Some platforms read the A as action, meaning any tracked event rather than a customer. Check which definition your report uses before comparing numbers.

How do I calculate CPA?

Divide total ad spend by conversions from that spend. $5,000 in spend producing 100 conversions is a $50 CPA. Keep the spend window and the conversion attribution window aligned or the number distorts.

What is a good CPA?

There is no universal good CPA. The LocaliQ 2026 search-ads survey puts the overall average cost per lead at $66.69, with industry averages from about $27 to $132. Good means below your break-even CPA with margin to spare, not below someone else's number.

Does CPA mean certified public accountant?

Yes, in an accounting context. A Certified Public Accountant is a US state-licensed accounting professional. This site covers both senses: the ad metric on this page, the credential under /accountant, plus the UK banking and NHS senses.
